"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:33-34

Our blessed Savior suffered so in life. All around him lie a world which must have caused him all manner of pain –a world full of sin, suffering, misery, and death. Added to this, all his days he had before him the prospect of the cross. Yet, we have no indication that, in the New Testament, Jesus was in his earthly ministry a morose, morbid, ever-saddened soul. Rather to the contrary. How did our Savior live with the doom of the cross looming before him and still exhibit love, joy, and peace? I wonder if the answer isn’t before us in the text quoted above. As the way, the truth, and the life, as the living word of God, would he not exemplify the daily resting in the Father’s care suggested in these verses? Had he not come to do the Father’s will above all else? Is there another who perfectly sought first the kingdom of God and his righteousness? The “therefore” at the beginning of verse 34 tells us that its advice is based on the confidence of verse 33. All these things shall be added to those who so seek the Lord. Life is to be lived one day at a time. Today we live trusting the Lord, dealing with the realities of Today. I take great comfort in thinking about our Savior in each moment living, entrusting himself to the Father’s care whilst seeking in everything to obey.

So when the day came, the Lord Our Righteousness said, Father into your hands I commit my spirit. As we live the days of our lives, so we live on that day. For it is always Today when you die. Then as now we receive our day from our Father’s hand, and put ourselves in His keeping.

Today does not appear to be the day I die unto the Lord. I will not project what the days ahead will be. Today has enough trouble of its own. With him who loves me, and gave himself for me, I will face the cares of today.
